Review of DuckDuckGo Browser

WHAT IS DUCKDUCKGO BROWSER?

DuckDuckGo is a browser and private search engine built by DuckDuckGo, Inc. around a single principle: stop personal data from being collected in the first place. Unlike Chrome or Firefox, which bolt privacy features on after the fact, DuckDuckGo’s browser is designed from the ground up so that zero browsing history is retained by default — not as an opt-in mode, but as the permanent default state. It’s best suited for everyday users who want strong, zero-effort privacy on mobile and desktop. It’s not suited for power users who depend on a large extension library, or for users in India seeking a built-in VPN from this browser specifically.

HOW IT WORKS

Download and install DuckDuckGo — there’s no account required and no sign-in prompt on launch. Open a tab and search: DuckDuckGo’s private search engine is the default, meaning your query never gets tied to a profile or stored history. Every site you visit gets a Tracker Radar check behind the scenes; third-party trackers from Google, Facebook, and thousands of other companies are blocked before they load. When you’re done, tap the Fire Button — one action, and everything is gone: tabs, cookies, logins, cached data. On Android, you can additionally turn on App Tracking Protection, which extends DuckDuckGo’s blocking to trackers hidden inside other apps on your phone, running quietly in the background.

UX & DESIGN

DuckDuckGo’s interface is the most minimal of any major privacy browser — no recommended sites, no news feed, no stats dashboard. The home screen shows only your favourited shortcuts and a search bar. This isn’t an oversight; it’s deliberate positioning for users who want the browser to stay out of the way. Dark mode is available and follows your system setting. On iOS, Face ID / Touch ID app lock is supported, preventing anyone from opening the browser without biometric confirmation. The design trades feature density for clarity, and for its target audience — privacy-conscious users who don’t want to configure anything — that trade-off is the right one.

PERFORMANCE & RELIABILITY

DuckDuckGo isn’t as fast as Chrome in raw JavaScript benchmarks, but blocking trackers and third-party scripts before they load means real-world page rendering is noticeably quicker on many ad-heavy sites. On Android, the browser uses approximately 88 MB of storage and is lighter on RAM than Chrome, making it a practical choice for mid-range devices popular in India. Battery usage is lower than Chrome on mobile because fewer background scripts run per page. The browser has no notable crash history, and the Android app is actively maintained with updates shipping consistently through 2025 and into 2026.

PRIVACY & PERMISSIONS

DuckDuckGo’s privacy model is genuinely strong for everyday threats, but it has real documented limitations you should know. First, in a 2022 disclosure that still carries reputational weight, DuckDuckGo was found to exempt Microsoft-owned trackers (including Bing and LinkedIn scripts) from blocking on mobile due to its search syndication agreement with Microsoft. DuckDuckGo has since updated its policies to reduce this exemption, but the episode established that commercial agreements can override privacy defaults. Second, DuckDuckGo’s fingerprinting protection is limited — it does not implement the aggressive randomisation that Brave does, meaning sophisticated trackers using canvas or hardware fingerprinting may still be able to identify your device across sessions. Third, an October 2024 audit found that certain outdated web technologies could expose device data enabling cross-tracking — this has since been patched. On the positive side: DuckDuckGo genuinely stores no search history, no browsing history, and no user profiles. Its privacy policy is four words: “We don’t track you”. Cookie Pop-up Protection, Link Tracking Protection, Referrer Tracking Protection, CNAME Cloaking Protection, and Smarter Encryption all run automatically.

PRICING & VALUE

The browser is completely free and the free tier is genuinely complete — every privacy feature described above is included at no cost. The Privacy Pro Plus subscription at $9.99/month adds a VPN, advanced AI model access in Duck.ai (GPT-4o, GPT-5, Claude Sonnet 4, Llama Maverick), Personal Information Removal, and Identity Theft Restoration. The critical caveat for Indian users: Privacy Pro is currently available only in the US, EU, Canada, and UK — India is not yet a supported region. For comparison, Brave’s free tier also includes full ad/tracker blocking and BAT rewards, while Brave’s paid VPN ($9.99/month) is available globally including India — making Brave the stronger option for Indian users who want a paid privacy add-on.

HOW IT COMPARES

vs. Brave Browser: DuckDuckGo wins on simplicity and interface minimalism; Brave wins on tracker-blocking depth (Brave blocks more by default), built-in crypto rewards, and VPN availability in India.

vs. Mozilla Firefox: DuckDuckGo wins on zero-configuration privacy and mobile UX; Firefox wins on extension library depth, desktop customizability, and stronger fingerprinting protection when configured in Strict mode.
